WEXFORD — Good teams make opponents pay for their mistakes.
That certainly was the case in Seneca Valley's WPIAL Quad A softball quarterfinal playoff game against Kiski Area Monday.
The Cavaliers entered the second inning with a 2-0 lead, but the Raiders, aided by four Kiski miscues, tallied 10 runs over the next three innings in a 10-2 victory.
Nine of SV's 10 runs were unearned.
"Kiski made a couple of mistakes there, and, when you get a team that can hit the ball like we can, that's what can happen," said Raiders coach George Trew.
The Raiders will face the Shaler in the semifinals at a time, date and site to be determined.
With one out in the top of the second, SV's Megan McCormick walked.
Ashley Watkins put down a sacrifice bunt, but Kiski third baseman Tiffany Brucker's throw was high and Watkins was safe at first.
Kelsey Gray followed with a ground ball back to pitcher Lauren Yohe, who turned toward third to force out courtesy runner Sara Mantick, but her throw went into foul territory, allowing Mantick to score SV's first run.
Watkins came home a few pitches later on a fielding error on a ball hit by Lauren Hunt.
SV shortstop Dana Hughes followed with an infield single, plating Gray for a 3-2 lead.
The Cavaliers (13-6) committed yet another costly error in the top of the fourth.
SV (15-5) responded with five straight hits, including Jackie Mangola's triple to left field that scored Alyssa DiMaria and Erin Mullen.
After Yohe managed to get out of the inning, she and her teammates faced the 10-2 deficit that they were unable to dent the rest of the game.
"If we had hit the ball the way we're capable of and if we had not made the errors, it would've been a closer game," said Kiski coach Diane Haney.
The Cavaliers averaged more than seven runs per game entering Monday's contest.
But SV starter Courtney Grootegoed shut down Kiski's offense after the first inning.
Brucker's two-run double in the bottom of the first gave the Cavaliers an early lead.
Grootegoed responded by allowing just two more hits the rest of the day. She ended the game with four strikeouts and three walks. |
