WEXFORD — Seneca Valley baseball coach Eric Semega was hoping for and received pitcher Cory Mazzoni's A game Tuesday.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, Jordan Jankowski also brought his.
The Peters Township senior pitcher shut out SV on three hits as the Indians defeated the defending state champions, 1-0, in a WPIAL Quad A quarterfinal playoff at North Allegheny.
Jankowski struck out 10 and walked two in the victory.
"We felt it was going to be a low-scoring game," said Peters Township coach Joe Maize. "We knew the caliber of pitcher (the Raiders) had and the fact that they were the defending state champions."
Mazzoni frustrated the Indians' offense, which entered the game with a team batting average of .362.
The senior right-hander struck out nine, walked none and gave up the one earned run on three hits.
"Cory did everything he needed to do today," said Semega. "The fact is we weren't able to come up with a couple of runs for him."
The Indians' lone tally came in the top of the first inning, when, after one out, Pete Ross doubled to center and scored when Jankowski followed with a single.
Mazzoni allowed just two baserunners the rest of the game when James Stratico singled with one out in the fourth and Jim Sams reached on a fielding error with two outs in the fifth.
The Raiders' best chance to tie the game came in the bottom of the third inning.
Ryan Turner led off the with a single before giving way to courtesy runner Brandon Durbin, who stole second base after one out.
With two outs, Ken Walrond walked to put runners at first and second.
Mike Eonta followed with a hard grounder up the middle. The ball appeared to be headed into center field, but Indians shortstop Jim Rider dove to his left and gloved the ball behind second base.
By the time he got to his feet, no play was available at first or second, but Durbin was well off of third base.
The courtesy runner first thought about getting back to the bag, but Rider's throw was already on its way to third baseman Sams.
Durbin broke for the plate, but he slipped halfway there. Sams came down the baseline and tagged him for the third out.
The only other inning in which SV (17-3) threatened was the fifth.
Derek Peluso drew a two-out walk and Shaine Patsilevas followed with a single to center, but Walrond flied out to end the threat.
Jankowski retired the Raiders in order in the final two innings, striking out four of the six batters.
Jankowski now has 60 strikeouts and just seven walks in 35 innings and moved his record to 5-0.
With the Raiders winning last year's PIAA title and the Indians the WPIAL crown, Tuesday's game lived up to the hype.
"You're not going to see a better game," said Maize. "It's a shame this game wasn't played (for the WPIAL title)."
The loss ends the high school careers of Seneca Valley's 15 seniors.
Over the last two years, the Raiders have gone 39-5 with two section titles and the state championship in 2007.
"I told the guys that months from now, years from now, they're not going to remember the sadness of today," said Semega. "This team has accomplished so much, nobody is ever going to forget it."
